Great Fire of London Day - 29/02/2008

On Tuesday 26th February, the Year 2 classes welcomed "History off the Page" for our exciting Great Fire of London event.

Everyone was dressed up in period dress (even the teachers and Mums!) ready for a busy day of activities.  The morning was taken up with learning about the trades of people at that time.  We learnt how to be weavers, scholars, apothecaries, seamstresses, candle makers, bakers and metalworkers.  Ben Shamash and Leonie Callow were chosen to be the rat catchers, ridding the city of the plague vermin.  They found it very amusing!
The afternoon was spent as archaeologists, digging for clues and investigating the past.  The children learnt how to use different types of evidence to find out about the families and occupations of people who lived in 1666.

The children came away from the day armed with lots of goodies that they had made and a renewed fervour for history!
