Nursery & Pre-Prep History & Art WOW Days - "Pictures of the Past" - 03/03/2008

Nursery and Pre-Prep had a very creative and fact finding three days making, constructing and exploring "Pictures of the Past".

The event was opened by royal visitors, King Henry and Queen Catherine. All of Pre-Prep came dressed up for the occasion in king, queen, knights and princess costumes.

Nursery and Reception had the task of making a new castle for the King and Queen. The three classes also reproduced a painting on a very large scale. Year 1 produced some very elaborate goblets and jewellery for King Henry and Queen Catherine. They explored the School grounds, observing and sketching the old parts of the buildings, and had a trip to the Swindon Art Gallery where they were able to handle, explore and draw a variety of historical artefacts.

Year 2 had a trip to the Outlet Shopping Centre in Swindon, where the children sketched the industrial machinery and discovered how parts of the old buildings had been incorporated into the new building. The sketches were then used to produce large paintings using metallic paint.

We also had another Royal visitor, Queen Elizabeth II. She was interviewed in our wonderful Fairy Circle. The children asked her some very interesting questions about her life as a Queen. King Henry and Queen Catherine closed the event on Friday afternoon, where the children presented their work to the Royal couple.

Over the three days the children were able to use a variety of sources to find information about the past and begin to make comparisons between life in the past and present day. Through these explorations the children were also developing their observational drawing skills and increasing their experience of using mixed media to create 2D and 3D art work.  A fantastic time was had by all.

Please feel free to come and view all the amazing art work on display around Prep-Prep.
