Key Stage 1
(Year 1 & Year 2)
The transition between Reception and Key Stage 1 is an important one. Pupils continue to receive a broad and balanced curriculum studying a range of subjects. Cross curriculum links are forged relating one area to another. Aspects of literacy and numeracy are timetabled each day and developing reading skills is given high priority. In Year 1 and 2 pupils' reading is regularly heard and reading books are sent home to allow parents to share reading time with their children.
Pupils enjoy a weekly French lesson with Monsieur A-G (Colin Acheson-Gray, Prep School Deputy Head) and a weekly games afternoon taught by Prep school staff. ICT is an important part of the curriculum and as well as having one lesson a week in the Prep School ICT suite, pupils take full advantage of interactive whiteboards and stand alone PCs in each class.
Both Year 1 and Year 2 pupils receive a list of spelling words each week to learn for a weekly test. In year 2 the test takes the form of a dictation. Year 2 pupils also receive a piece of either literacy or numeracy homework once a week. During the Summer term pupils work together to perform a Key Stage 1 play.
The Golden Rules continue to form an important part of pupils' lives, with responsibility being fostered by allowing pupils the chance to care for themselves, each other and the school environment, by having an opportunity to be a Class Helper, a Playground Helper, a Library Helper and a Recycling Helper.
Clubs
On a Tuesday between 3pm and 3.30pm Year 2 children experience a range of activities in the form of clubs. These include, recorder, board games, gardening, thinking skills and a range of outdoor activities.
During the Summer Term Year 2 pupils spend time in the Prep school in Year 3 and share some Lower School assemblies. This helps ensure the smooth transition from Pre-Prep to Prep.
