A huge thank you to everyone who helped make this such a successful event, from the friends and family who attended to the tireless volunteers without whom it would not be possible to run the Christmas Fair.
We are delighted to report that the Fair raised in excess of £7,000, a proportion of which will be donated to Bourton Village Hall and Friends of Pinewood will be able to make a substantial donation to the construction of the Prep Adventure Playground.
Thank you!

Learning outside the classroom is an approach that has always been wholeheartedly embraced by Pinewood. From the introduction of the Pinewood Adventure, exploring the assault course or the garden, enjoying the different themes of the Pre-Prep WOW days, or visits to places like Windsor Castle, Pinewood pupils experience the world beyond the classroom on a regular basis.
We are delighted to have been short-listed for the upcoming national Learning Outside the Classroom Awards and have had to prepare a portfolio of evidence. Extracts from some of this are included below:

“LOtC is a regular teaching strategy which staff not only believe in but are excited about. It is a regular part of all pupils’ lives being embedded into the whole curriculum. Teachers use it as one of many daily teaching strategies. e.g. it would not be considered unusual to find pupils exploring the school and its grounds looking for 2D and 3D shapes, nor would exploring the local village and relating it to map work in geography or going on a walk as part of a listening comprehension be considered anything out of the ordinary. These are just a few examples of LOtC activities that staff, pupils and parents consider as normal, everyday teaching activities. They involve everyone!”

“Multisensory beds and a polytunnel extend the Science, English and Maths curriculum. Pupils’ measure the distance between seedlings and see what happens if they are planted too close or too far apart. They estimate the weight of tomato and potato crops. They measure the height of sweetcorn, using the information in data handling and ICT lessons. October’s pumpkins were used in fractions lessons before being turned into cakes and, along with onions and potatoes given to the local community at Harvest, and other produce given to the Swindon Food Bank charity. Much of the salad eaten at lunch was school grown! These are real life active ways of developing skills, fostering emotional and social understanding, giving real meaning to learning.”

On Thursday, 7th October all of Year 6 did a sculpture workshop. We started by having 3 9x9 metre planks and then the teachers sketched out an underwater aquarium.

We then had to scrunch up newspapers and stick or staple them on. Once the bodies of the fish, sharks, foliage etc. had been built up we started to put on mod rock to harden it. Mod rock is made from the rock lime. We had to wet the mod rock to get it mouldable. We had to mould it round the newspaper and let it harden, it only takes a couple of minutes to dry though. When we had mod rocked it we put on a layer of protective paint. We left that for a day and then we put coloured paint on it. Once it has dried we will hang it in the hall.
We also went down to do wood carving with the 2 professionals. We started with a long hexagon shaped piece of wood. We had to carve it down into a peg to fit into a perfectly round hole. Once it fitted into the hole we had to carve it to make it look nice. We used an old fashioned spinner with a pedal. We pushed up and down on the pedal and the wood spun, we used carving tools to cut it down until it was perfect. We sanded it down and put it in the hole, but if it was too small we couldn’t do anything about it and we had to start again.

As part of their History topic this term, Year 5 had an exciting, informative day at Windsor Castle.

"I loved Windsor Castle. My favourite things were the Guards playing music and the Chinese tourists taking pictures of us! I liked going into St George’s Chapel and knowing that Queen Elizabeth I haunted the library and that King Henry VIII pulled his sick leg along the ground. I liked having lunch because I was hungry and I was very interested in Queen Mary’s dolls house. I can’t believe that the dolls had cars and real fur clothes and the dolls house was huge. It even had electricity and a wine cellar! Sadly, at the end of the day, we got on the bus and left."

We would like to say a very big thank you to all the Pinewood Community who kindly donated harvest gifts for the older citizens of Bourton and the Salvation Army at Gorse Hill in Swindon. They were much appreciated and well received by the recipients.
Equally we were pleased by the attendance at our various Harvest Services. The church in Bourton looked fantastic and the singing, poems and other contributions clearly sent out a good message. Particular thanks to the Rev Richard Hancock, one of the Shrivenham ministers and Fergus Llewellyn, Housemaster at Cheltenham College, who both spoke on the meaning of this time of year.
In addition we must not forget the pupils and parents from school – the Taylors and Carter-Brennans who helped out on Sunday afternoon with the distribution.

Last Sunday The George Bailey Annual Charity Bike Ride and Rubber Legs Challenge took place at Pinewood, thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to making it a fabulous day.
It was wonderful to see so many children, parents, siblings, pets and staff join in and share the experience. The orange t-shirts looked fabulous and worked very well against the Wiltshire countryside. The weather was perfect and we all met after for hotdogs, ice cream, swimming and social.
It was great to see so many 2009 leavers return to take part in the Bike Ride and catch up on last year, thank you for making the effort to join us in what I appreciate is a busy month, it was lovely seeing you all again. We look forward to seeing you again next year.
I feel the photographs taken by Tori Martin and Tracy reflect the day beautifully, I would like to thank them for their contribution to the day. Their photos can be viewed on the school website under Events Gallery, they are fabulous so do take a look.
Thank you very much to the wonderful team who made the whole day possible:
To Tina Fox Edwards for organising the Bike Ride, Tina did an amazing job and her work for the Trust is greatly appreciated.
To Jenny Martin for the perfect catering and to Carol Baker for producing and marketing such gorgeous t shirts.
To all the marshalls: Adam Fox-Edwards, Brian Baker, Carol Baker, Julie Dyke, Sarah Freeman, Piers Martin and Tina Fox-Edwards, for keeping us safe and enabling the event to take place.
To Liz and David Woods and Caroline Brandi for help sell drinks etc on the day.
Finally, huge thanks go to Philip, Henrietta and the staff at Pinewood for their continued support for this event, it is greatly appreciated.
The Sponsorship money is still coming in from the Rubber Legs Challenge, please continue to drop off your sponsorship money at the School Office. So far the day has raised a fantastic £1,500. The money raised goes to The George Bailey Trust, which helps provide care for children with cancer.
It is a wonderful achievement, thank you all for your part in making this such a truly remarkable day which has and will continue to touch so many, well done children.
With Kind Regards from Cathy Bailey.

On Monday 5th July Pinewood’s polo team travelled to Papplewick.
We took a team of four, which consisted of Felix Spooner, Sophie Akehurst, Issy Hills and Harry Davies. It was a mini tournament with a Group A and a Group B, each team played two chukkas.
We were in Group A along with Cothill, Papplewick A and Summerfields A. Each game was three-a-side, so Sophie and Issy swapped. Our first match was Summerfields A. We won 4-0 which was a promising start. Next up was Papplewick A and were apparently ‘the team to beat’. We had a close match and beat them 1-0. Next was Cothill who looked like a very good side. We went up 1-0 but then they equalised later on in the chukka, resulting in a 1-1 draw.
Luckily the draw was enough to enable us to win the tournament. Overall it was a fun afternoon, everyone played very well and all the players and spectators enjoyed themselves and Pinewood came back with a large cup!
Harry Davies
JB: Without a doubt Harry Davies was the player of the tournament and he scored all seven Pinewood goals

Yet again our young equestrian Pinewoodians did the school proud at the National Schools’ Cross Country Event on Sunday. This event was well attended and run over a very well built course. There were many substantial bonus fences that could be attempted and a timed section with a gate to open and close.
Sadly due to a last minute withdrawal, we could not field a team but Jess Tregoning and Alex Norris represented the school as individuals. Jess attempted all but two of the bonus fences to finish 6th and Alex went for the lot but had one stop on the way for 7th.
Interestingly our ‘team‘ had the best score but with only two members, we were not eligible for the team prize! A terrific achievement though, and congratulations to Jess.

For the first time the Leavers' Trip took our Year 8's to France in the foothills of the Pyrenees, where they experienced everything from white water rafting to a local french tradition, a high ropes course and swimming in snow melt.
Here are some of their memories of the trip:
"The Leavers' Trip was the best I had ever been on. It was an early morning wake up call, but I was still energetic because I knew that in a few hours I would be in France ... When I arrived at school, I could tell people were excited, by seeing people bounding down the stairs."
"The flight was fine, even though there was some snoring coming from the teachers' direction."
"We arrived at the hostel in Seix and noticed straight away what we were in for - high mountain peaks and a rushing river excited the majority of us."

"On the first morning we were surprised with the dangerously fun (in some cases painful) experience of white water rafting."
"We got into our wetsuits and a few people looked a little like Borat and a few looked like Lara Croft."
"I think the whole year and not just me enjoyed rafting for the first time. I personally thought rafting when the river was dangerously high was the best, as well as when we got to jump out. One of my highlights was when Mr A-G jumped out of the raft and bobbed down the river, being hit by numerous rocks."
"During the festival of moving the animals up into the mountains, one of my highlights of the week came when Lee, Ollie, James and Spoons lost in a table football match against the girls and were forced to dance in the middle of all the parades."
"The second day was when the real adventure began and our four hour mountain hike commenced. We experienced some incredible weather conditions, which enabled us to act as more of a team."
"We were lucky in that the weather stayed fair all the way up, so it was a surprise to see snow at the summit."
We spent the night in a cosy refuge and enjoyed a well-deserved supper after a freezing cold swim in a mountain river of melted snow. I accidentally invented a slide down a waterfall, which left award winning cuts and bruises on my legs, but which everyone else enjoyed sliding down."

"That night, after supper, we sang old french mountain songs and then got some much needed sleep, even though I slept between Issy and Mrs Hoyland."
"The girls and Mrs Hoyland were all in one dorm with a massive "pyramid" bunk bed."
"On the second day of the walk, spirits started generally low as it was raining, but then Philly and some of the other girls started singing and we all joined in - this was another highlight of the week."
"I will now be remembered for my life saving rugby tackle, which saved the headmaster's wife from slipping down 50 metres of ice and off the edge of a cliff.
"To finish off the week, we did some high ropes, which were so high you felt like an ant."
"All in all, the week has been one of the best weeks of my life."
"I enjoyed the trip very much, but it was rather upsetting that it was my last Pinewood school trip."
With thanks to members of Year 8.

On Tuesday the Pinewood Polo Squad played a return match v Rendcomb College. Rendcomb had done their home work and cleverly marked Harry Davies, who loved the challenge and gave as good as he got; but Josh was given space to give Rendcomb scoring chances.
Pinewood started with a one goal handicap, which they clawed back in the first chukka. The second chukka went from end to end with both teams popping in goals and Sophie Akehurst destroying one goal post! The hooter went with Rendcomb pressurising the Pinewood goal; Harry broke out and played a long shot which was chased hard by Harry and Felix and with less than 5 seconds remaining Pinewood scored the winning goal.
Following the match the presentations were made to Harry Davies, Felix Spooner, Sophie Akehurst, Georgie Bethwaite and Issy Hills and this was followed by delicious picnics. It was a wonderfully exciting match and a great way to prepare for next week's Papplewick Tournament.
I am hoping that some new player will take up this exciting sport so that Pinewood continues to produce a team in 2011.

Against strong opposition from the larger single sex prep schools, our Year 6 and Year 8 teams performed well.
Our Year 8/7 A team competed really well achieveing the following results:
Henry Alexander - 3rd in the Triple Jump, 4th in the hurdles and 800m
Oliver Britten - 4th in the 100m
Jacob Brandi - 4th in the Long Jump
Phillippa Hall - 4th in the Javelin
but with no B team and accumulated scores we finished 7th in the combined total.
Our Year 6 team fought really hard and finished 4th, with the following individual results:
Fergus O'Keefe - 2nd in the Discus & 3rd in the Shot
Reuben Arkwright - 3rd in the 200m
Hayden Say - 3rd in the 400m
Dominic Hutchinson - 3rd in the Javelin
Islay Kingham - 2nd in the 100m
Both teams were boosted by the addition of girls and although they received a number of comments from the opposition, the girls put the boys in their place. There were notable performances from Phillippa Hall, Islay Kingham and the A relay team consisting of a boy and 3 girls (Oliver Britten, Phillippa Hall, Georgie Bethwaite and Olympia Olympitis), who finished 4th out of 8.
It was an afternoon of quality performances enjoyed by all who took part.

Our annual meeting for Years 3-5 with Beaudesert, Prior Park & St Hugh's
Sadly due to horrific weather this meeting was never completed. Nearly 130 children competed against each other and the elements and all the middle distance events were completed, the 200m were run and some long jump and vortex throwing was measured.
The Pinewood teams were competing exceptional well and we had a good number of highly placed athletes. It was a great shame that we are unable to let the children finish the short sprints, relays and field events, but the weather conspired against us.

Ryan shot the Devizes Top 10, the second of three County selection tournaments.
In very gusty conditions Ryan put in a solid performance to win again by a huge margin, setting another personal best score, and breaking another club record. With only one qualifying event to go, and winning the first two qualifiers, Ryan has all but assured himself of a place representing Dorset and Wiltshire in the Inter County Championships. Ryan won the Dorset and Wiltshire County Championship last year and has now won 9 County level Tournaments in succession including Dorset, Wiltshire, Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and Gloucestershire County Championships. Ryan’s next major competition is the National GB Championships at the National Sports Centre, Lilleshall, on the 4th July where he will face the best archers from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales and where he is targeting a top three finish.

Congratulations to Lucas Arkwright, who has achieved great success already this year in athletics.
Lucas was 4th (coming in behind James Eyles) in the Wiltshire Amateur Athletics Championships, when competing in the U11 category and therefore a year younger than all the other competitors.
He also finished 2nd at the Sandra Luke Memorial Cup, Oxford. He came first in the Cricket ball throw with a throw 5m further than his nearest competitors of 34.10m. He then came 2nd in the 800m, with a time of 3:03.6mins, beating his PB by some 15 secs! He came fifth in the Long Jump with a distance of 29m. There were 17 competitors in total.
