The 18th Annual Pinewood Rugby 7's Tournament

One hundred and sixty Under 13 boys took part in our annual tournament. They came from 16 schools from as far afield as Suffolk, Worcestershire and Somerset. The sun shone, though it was bitterly cold and the final was played in near darkness.

In the pool rounds the results were as follows:

Group A: 1st Swanbourne House, 2nd Abingdon, 3rd Prior Park and 4th Farleigh

Group B: 1st The Elms, 2nd St Andrew’s, 3rd Pinewood and 4th Hatherop Castle

Group C: 1st Old Buckenham Hall, 2nd Dean Close JS, 3rd Cheam, 4th Christ Church,

Group D: 1st The Downs, 2nd Beaudesert, 3rd St Hugh’s and 4th Ashfold.

In the knock out stage, when 3rd place and 4th place play for the plate, St Hugh’s beat Ashfold in the Final; Pinewood having been taken out by Ashfold in the quarter finals.

In the main competition, The Downs beat Swanbourne House for The Steggall Trophy. No school had managed to score a point against The Downs in the whole Tournament.

The medals and the trophy were presented by Gordon Connell (Scotland and British Lions). We are very grateful to our referees who kindly gave up their time; they came from a selection of the senior schools that we currently send boys on to at the age of 13.
