Sport and exercise play a big part in a Pinewood child’s day, as it is the belief that Physical Education and Games complement and enhance each child’s educational lives. Sport provides a satisfying and rewarding experience and develops not only pupils’ physical, but also life skills, through their all-round active participation.

Pupils achieve high levels of success in a broad range of sporting pursuits, due to the high levels of support they receive and the many opportunities they have to participate in team sports

Pinewood is proud of its magnificent grounds, playing fields and facilities, allowing the PE and Games department to offer the pupils a full and diverse range of sports and activities.   The multi-use Astroturf caters for hockey, netball and tennis, as well as the grass pitches for rugby, football, hockey, lacrosse and cricket.  We also have a nine-hole golf course, netball and tennis courts, a sports hall, an outdoor swimming pool and athletics facilities, which include a notorious cross-country course!

For the Prep School, the games programme is full and varied with sport coached most afternoons.  The sessions aim to develop skills, maintain and stimulate pupil interest in PE and Games, and to promote health and fitness for current and future lifestyles.  Team sport is a major component.  Teams compete in inter-school fixtures every Wednesday and alternate Saturdays as well as additional tournaments and festivals throughout the year.  A & B teams are selected on merit whilst a squad system operates for the C and D teams.  Every child has the opportunity to represent the school in matches on a regular basis and experience being part of a team in competitive circumstances.

Skills and Values

The importance of sport and physical education is taught and coached to all children in the Pre-Prep within a fun and supportive environment. Children are introduced to basic movement and dance, ball skills and a wide range of games, developing their co-ordination, balance and confidence. The importance and understanding of core sportsmanship values and the need to work together as teams form a key part of each session. Pupils are introduced to all our major sports during their time in the Pre-Prep while skills taught within PE lessons form the foundation stage for their continued development when transferring to the Prep School.

Pinewood places great importance on pupils’ attitude and behaviour within Sport. From an early age children are taught about the importance of playing sport and activities in a balanced and enjoyable manner. Pupils are encouraged to give the best, regardless of their ability, to achieve both individual and team goals.
