After heavy rain over the last few days it was touch and go whether we would go ahead with the tournament. The Estates Team pulled out all the stops to produce outstanding pitches and we were able to welcome Abingdon Prep, Ashfold, Beaudesert, Cheltenham Prep, Dean Close Prep, The Downs Malvern, The Elms, Prior Park, St Andrew’s Pangbourne, St Hugh’s and Wycliffe to the 36th Annual Pinewood Rugby 7s Tournament.
With the new “Waterfall” format in line with RFU guidelines, each team played five pool matches before the cross pool play-offs. The standard of rugby was excellent overall with a glut of talent on show. Spectators grabbed a coffee and a few “bites” while watching the boys play competitive rugby in line with the spirit of the game. As the light faded the final matches got under way – competing for the Steggall Trophy and the Pinewood Plate and Vase. Congratulations to Ashfold on their fine win against Dean Close in the Final. The Downs, Malvern beat local rivals The Elms to lift the Plate, while Cheltenham Prep closed out Abingdon Prep to take home the Vase. Our thanks to all the referees who gave up their valuable time to officiate and thank you to all the Pinewood Catering, Medical and Back-up teams for making the day such a success.
