On Monday 10 local schools took part in the 3rd Annual Pinewood Maths Competition. After warming up with some short puzzles, the teams’ listening and calculation skills were put to the test in a mental Maths round. They then went through the curtain to the 6 puzzle stations waiting for them, including some fiendish Sudoku-style grids, a chess problem, codes to break and making a tower from marshmallows and sticks. The final round was the Alpharace, where teams had to solve calculations or Countdown style problems to be the first to take a letter off the wall. It was a frantic start, but settled down when only the difficult ones remained. After a busy afternoon puzzling, we announced the top three schools, after some well-deserved tea: in joint third were Fernham & Longcot, and Holy Family; Pinewood came second, and in first place were St Margaret’s, Calne.
Well done to all the teams who took part and my particular thanks to Mr Benbow and Miss Poyntz for helping with the afternoon, and Mr Fogden and the Headmaster for collecting and dropping off the schools.
