Year 5 Trip to Swindon Mosque

mosque 2

Year 5 went on a trip to Swindon mosque. The first thing I noticed was that it didn’t look like the mosques we had looked at in books as it didn’t have domes on the roof.

When we went inside we had to take our shoes off, and put them in a rack, it shows respect to take your shoes off. Firstly, we looked at a tapestry that showed the House of Allah; Adam built the foundations and Abraham built the house.

We then learnt about the 5 pillars of Islam. These are things a good Muslim must do:

Zakat, which means giving to the poor

Fasting for the month of Ramadan

The last is pilgrimage

Then we listened to a man recite a prayer, it was mystical and you could see he felt connected to Allah. We carried on looking round and I noticed that men and women must wash and pray in different places. The prayer mats were interesting as they have a pattern representing Allah’s house, they don’t have pictures just a pattern. The mats always face Allah’s house when they pray, wherever they are in the world.

The trip was interesting as we could see the difference between a mosque and churches, and it helped us understand the religion better.
