Pinewood School

Our Commitment

Pinewood pupils become positive, responsible people, working and cooperating with others, having developed knowledge and skills through learning that extends well beyond a traditional classroom. These are not ‘one-off’ opportunities.  Pupils are regularly away from their desks.  This commitment to Learning Outside the Classroom has been recognised by the National Council for Learning Outside the Classroom, which granted Pinewood a regional winner’s award for their outstanding provision in this area.

Within the Curriculum

Pinewood is perfectly located for an education that spans beyond the classroom walls.  The wonderful grounds provide varied opportunities for learning, be that the Outdoor classroom, the Pre-Prep garden or the many nature walks.

Teachers plan engaging and investigative lessons, providing real-life opportunities for pupils to put learning into practice. Whether this is sharing seasonal nature walks, to help further understand the life cycle of plants, or, higher up in the school, taking part in the Pinewood Dragons’ Den, where the children research, design and develop a product that will benefit Pinewood and its community.

Themed Curriculum ‘WOW’ days like ‘Year 3 Egyptian’ and ‘Year 4 Volcano’ are frequent, and reflect teachers’ innovative and imaginative ability to create Learning Outside the Classroom experiences.

Extra-Curricular Opportunities

Pinewood Adventure’ is very much at the heart of our Learning Outside the Classroom ethos.  This annual adventure programme is run from Year 3 upwards and gives all children the opportunity to develop their independence, team-building skills and resilience, but most importantly, it is great fun.  The SKILLS programme embraces a holistic education, providing opportunities for improvement in both cerebral and physical activities, ranging from chess to karate, from mindfulness to face painting and from riding to clay pigeon shooting.

Each year pupils meet over 25 visitors, ranging from travelling theatre companies to African Street Dancers. The children benefit from speakers invited into school, as well as frequent trips to places of interest.

These are real-life, active ways of developing skills, fostering emotional and social understanding, and giving real meaning to learning.  Learning Outside the Classroom is not just at Pinewood’s heart, it is in its soul!
