We are delighted to announce an exciting development in our Upper School (Years 7 and 8) Science curriculum. Starting in September 2026, we will move away from following the traditional 13+ Common Entrance route in Science in favour of a new bespoke curriculum developed by our own Science Department. This new curriculum specifically allows us to focus on developing our pupils’ ‘working scientifically skills’ through comprehensive investigative work and analytical enquiry, while maintaining high levels of academic rigour. While the ISEB syllabus remains our foundation, this approach creates the necessary space to encourage Pinewood pupils to be curious, independent, creative, and confident scientists.

As our Headmaster, Neal Bailey, writes: “At Pinewood, we pride ourselves on being a forward-thinking school that prepares our pupils for the next stage of their education with confidence and creativity. This curriculum innovation is a prime example of our commitment to academic excellence through modern, inspired thinking. By evolving our approach, we are ensuring our pupils are not just learning facts, but are developing the critical thinking and independence they need for senior school and beyond. We have been greatly encouraged by the strong support from our senior school partners as we take this exciting step.”
Under our new programme, pupils will no longer sit the traditional 13+ Common Entrance paper, moving instead to a varied and robust assessment framework. Assessment for each topic will conclude with a written test to evaluate understanding of the content. To further mirror real-world scientific practice, several modules will include practical assessments based on investigative work using correct scientific principles. Additionally, specific topics will feature STEAM projects, where pupils are assessed on their individual and group contributions, ideas, and outcomes. To ensure continued academic rigour, each year will conclude with a full written assessment.
Our Head of Science, Ms Sarah James, explains our vision: “Our goal is to ignite a genuine spark for science that stays with our pupils long after they leave us. By prioritising ‘working scientifically’ skills, we are empowering our Year 7 and 8 pupils to become analytical researchers and confident problem-solvers. This bespoke approach allows them to delve deeper into investigative work and data analysis – skills that are essential for success at the senior level. We want our children to leave Pinewood as ambassadors for the subject, arriving at their next schools with a high level of enjoyment and an advanced skill set.”
A highlight of our new curriculum will be the Year 8 Science Fair held during the Summer Term. This event will allow our pupils to showcase their research, communication, scientific, and analytical skills to the school community. We intend to invite Heads of Science and Academic Deputy Heads from senior schools to witness the high level of scientific enquiry achieved by our pupils.

The ‘100 Voices for Nature’ initiative saw our pupils and staff working hard to complete 100 challenges this spring to help nature, a wonderful idea championed by Year 4 pupil Bea and the Pinewood Eco Committee.
