What to Consider During a Prep School Open Morning
Discover what to look for when choosing the best prep school in Oxfordshire, Wiltshire or Gloucestershire for your child.
We are delighted to share with you some of the key highlights from Mr Bailey’s Speech Day address. Speech Day at Pinewood School is always a special occasion; a time to come together as a community to celebrate the achievements, character, and spirit of our pupils.
This year’s address reflected on individuality, kindness, joy, and the extraordinary power of shared experience. At the heart of it all was a simple truth – that there is no one way to be brilliant, and that every child should be able to grow, contribute and shine in their own way.
“At Pinewood, we are committed to creating an environment where every child feels seen, valued and empowered—not despite their differences, but because of them. Central to this is our belief that true education must recognise and nurture the broad spectrum of personality types, talents and ways of being in the world. Whether a child is naturally confident and outgoing or more reflective and reserved, they each bring their own set of strengths to our community. Our job as educators is to create space for both and ensure everyone can flourish.”
“We believe that success is not a one-size-fits-all concept. It can be found in the quiet child who shows understated perseverance and empathy; in the pupil who leads by example rather than volume; in the creative thinker who reflects deeply before offering a solution that surprises everyone.”
“Initiatives such as the hugely popular SKILLS programme offer children the chance to explore passions beyond the academic curriculum, building self-esteem in ways that feel authentic to them. Our reviewed academic setting model ensures children are supported at the right level without being defined by labels. In sport, our inclusive ethos means that every child takes part and has the opportunity to shine, regardless of ability or experience.”
This commitment to recognising and nurturing each child’s individual strengths is the foundation of life at Pinewood. From the thoughtful questions to the creative ideas and the lively energy around the school, it’s clear that our pupils are what truly bring this community to life. While their enthusiasm keeps the staff constantly engaged, it’s exactly this spirit that shapes the vibrant and inspiring environment we all cherish.
“Working here is a masterclass in unpredictability, thanks entirely to the 400+ young minds constantly dreaming, questioning, creating and—let’s be honest—plotting. It is the joy of youth in its purest form, and it makes every single day an adventure.”
“They make us laugh, keep us humble, and remind us daily that while we might be the grown-ups, they are the ones who make this place so endlessly brilliant. Pinewood is not just a school—it is a live show, a mystery novel, a comedy sketch and a heartwarming drama all rolled into one. And honestly? We would not have it any other way.”
That sense of warmth and togetherness has been especially evident throughout this milestone year, as we celebrated the 150th anniversary of Pinewood School. It’s been a year filled with moments that have brought us together as a community and reminded us of the joy, unity, and strength we share when we support one another.
“Throughout this year, the 150th of this outstanding educational establishment, we have been privileged to share in a multitude of events and experiences that have drawn us closer together—joyful moments that lift the soul and remind us why schools like ours matter so profoundly.”
“There are certain occasions in school life that transcend the ordinary—they become stories we will tell again and again. PINEFEST was one such moment: an extraordinary afternoon, utterly unique in its atmosphere and dazzling in its scale. From the vibrant creativity on display to the heartfelt performances, from the breathtaking staging to the food, fun and flair—it was a day full of wonder.”
“But beyond the visual spectacle and the buzz of activity, what made the event truly magical was the spirit behind it. The unspoken but deeply felt atmosphere of unity and joy, the sense that everyone was pulling together to create something memorable—and doing so gladly.”
And from one memorable day to another, Speech Day marked a time of farewell for the Year 8 pupils preparing to step into the next chapter. The message to them was one of pride, encouragement and hope:
“Leaving a place you love is never easy, but there is something special about stepping away when you are right in the heart of it—it means you are leaving with full sails and happy memories.”
“Your passions—even the weird and wonderful ones—will pull you forward. So keep growing. Keep being curious. Radiate your brilliance and keep being gloriously, unashamedly you. Shine your way, and those who shine like you will gather.”
Thank you to our entire Pinewood community for your continued support, and for making this year one to remember. We wish you all a happy, restful summer.
