Pinewood pupils were immersed in a day of discovery for our annual Whole-School STEAM Day. It was a day where Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics converged in a display of creativity, leadership and collaborative problem-solving.

Pinewood challenges pupils beyond the usual confines of the National Curriculum, 11+ and Common Entrance syllabi, and STEAM Day was a wonderful example of this. The day involved the whole school community with staff and pupils joined by tutors from visiting schools and a guest appearance from an Old Pinewoodian. The result was an immersive experience for our pupils that sparked a genuine sense of wonder.

Downe House invited our pupils to step into the future. In the Drawing Room, a Genetic Testing Workshop allowed children to dive into the building blocks of life, making complex biological concepts tangible. Simultaneously, the Robot Coding Workshop in the Theatre challenged pupils to think like programmers, using logic and sequences to bring machines to life.

The Egg Drop Challenge, led by Monkton Combe, saw pupils work in small groups, debating the merits of various shock-absorption materials, and cheering, as the egg ‘test pilots’ survived the fall. The Balloon Car Challenge turned our sports hall floor into a race track, teaching the fundamentals of propulsion and aerodynamics through iterative design and plenty of laughter.

Malvern College provided one of the highlights of the day: a world-class Morgan car and an accompanying Car Design Workshop. Having a Morgan, an icon of British engineering,  on-site, was a profound inspiration and a great conversation starter. Pupils participated in the workshop, sketching and building prototypes of vehicles of the future while drawing inspiration from the craftsmanship of the past.

The Pinewood staff also delivered a series of lessons that were nothing short of exceptional. The diversity of the activities showcased just how broad the STEAM umbrella really is.

Rockets and Pyrotechnics: Engineering met artistry as pupils constructed and launched their own rockets. This was complemented by vibrant artwork sessions exploring the chemistry and visual geometry of fireworks.

Textiles and Puppetry: Proving the ‘A’ in STEAM is vital, pupils designed textile puppets, learning about material properties and structural integrity through the lens of creative design.

The Magic of Numbers: We were especially proud to welcome back Rollo S. (Old Pinewoodian, 2024) for a ‘Magic by Rollo’ session. Seeing a former pupil return to share how mathematical principles can create seemingly impossible illusions was a true full-circle moment.

The Poetry of Science: During English lessons, pupils explored the human side of discovery by creating poems about famous scientists, combined with the pupils’ love of Pinewood. It was a wonderful way to bridge the gap between the analytical and the lyrical.

The atmosphere throughout the day was electric. More than just a series of experiments, STEAM Day was a celebration of core Pinewood values – curiosity and perseverance. We saw pupils collaborating across year groups, overcoming ‘failed’ prototypes with renewed determination, and a community united by the joy of discovery.

As our pupils packed away their robots and rockets, they left with the curiosity and confidence to ask ‘why?’ and the skills to figure out ‘how’.
